In her successful double Album City of Dreams in 2010, the guitarist, singer and composer Julia Malischnig has already shown that there are no stylistic barriers for her. Now her new album and project reveals a kaleidoscope of musical variety, which spans the continents: Kiss of Life was inspired by her concert trips to South Africa, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Kiev as well as her roots in Carinthia and presents the artist’s own moving and engaging compositions.
Julia Malischnig’s music tells stories, which are full of colour, contrast, intensity and passion. Her poetic compositions flit between classical, world music influences and jazz harmony. They are performed in a spirited and virtuoso manner and are supplemented with atmospheric and authentic songs in which the guitarist also impresses as a singer. At the heart of the programme are her arrangements and the interweaving of Carinthian songs with folk melodies from other countries.
Kiss of Life - Julia Malischnig solo or with a band – is a fascinating combination of emotionality and virtuosity. It features a musical crossover artist who eludes all fashion trends with her unconventional and unique style.
While the previous album ‘City of Dreams’ sewed the seed, the new production by the Austrian artist is the flower: Julia Malischnig’s sound has developed even deeper as a composer. She skilfully draws on various influences such as classical, pop, jazz, Latin and world music beyond Europe. Her instrumental pieces and songs impress together with sophisticated compositions, which represent the ideal pairing of uniqueness with complexity. The beautiful and virtuoso guitar piece, which forms the title track, is the ideal start to the album and well worth a listen. In addition to the title track and multi-layered guitar suite ‘Piece for Kyiv’, the exceptional ‘Arabian Nights’ is also recommended: guitars, singing, fantastic melodies and perfect interaction in the ensemble create a rare unity. This successful CD is topped off by its audiophile production, which together with the music itself, is a real treat for the ears.
Harald Wittig, Akustik Gitarre 5/16
Julia Malischnig’s exceptional ability is reflected in the fact that she can create uniformity from so many different styles and in her passionate musical language, which follows its own tune. In an atmosphere which flits between tender melancholy and energy-charged vibrancy, her tunes (around half of which are purely instrumental) tell eventful stories which are sometimes touching and sometimes make you want to dance. ‘Kiss of Life’ is a strong and varied piece of music, one that grows from time to time and gains in intensity. A great success.

Julia Malischnig is a poster girl for cultural imports and exports. In the music of the songs she writes herself, featured on the highly recommended CD Kiss of Life, she draws on musical elements, impressions and themes, which she has encountered during her tours of countries across the world including South Africa, Azerbaijan and Russia, transforming them into new music and vocal works.
