About Julia
The musical language of guitarist, singer and composer Julia Malischnig is characterised by emotional depth and sensual strength and her versatility transports her music beyond stylistic borders. Her compositions capture the magic of the moment and tell of emotional impressions, experiences, encounters and dreams.
In her performances, she combines virtuosity and emotionality in an authentic way. A musical crossover artist who eludes all fashion trends with her unconventional and unique style.
Born in Villach, Austria, Julia Malischnig studied classical guitar at the University of Music in Vienna under Konrad Ragossnig, at the Music Academy in Basel under Oscar Ghiglia and under Pepe Romero, Frank Bungarten and Alexander Swete, among others. Numerous other awards followed the honorary award from BMUKK Austria in 2003. Invitations to international festivals have also taken her beyond Europe to South America, South Africa, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates in particular.
While her first CD JOY, recorded in Havana in 2005, is purely instrumental and focuses on classical music, she soon graduated to new artistic development. She began increasingly to use her voice as a second instrument and created her own compositions. One key element was her interaction with other musicians as well as with artists from fields such as opera, acting, literature and contemporary dance.
The double album City of Dreams reflected this development in 2010. Featuring 15 of her own compositions, virtuoso interpretations and edits, this album offers an initial insight into her broad ranging forms of expression. In 2015 the new album Kiss of Life gave rise to a musical diversity, which spans the continents. Inspired by her concert trips to South Africa, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Kiev as well as her roots in Carinthia, this album impresses with the artist’s own engaging compositions as well as her passionate musical language.
Julia Malischnig produced both albums on her own label: Edición La Guitarra Esencial, named after La Guitarra esencial...the art of guitar, her international Guitar Festival on the Millstätter See in Carinthia, Austria which she launched in 2008 and has been successfully managing ever since. She has also been the mastermind behind Una Noche de Guitarra at the Tiroler Festspiele Erl since 2015. Based on her concept The Art of Guitar - an exciting stringed instrument performance between form and freedom - she enriches the international festival scene with her personal philosophy: bringing to life the fascinating diversity of guitar music in all its forms.
"My medium is my instrument, the guitar. Fingers seek, ears hear and music takes shape”.
